CANDLE CARE

  • WICK TRIMMING

Keep wicks centered and trimmed. Trim wicks to 1/8”-1/4” before every light to ensure a strong, even flame and reduced soot buildup over time. Wicks that are too long will not draw wax close enough to the flame for sustained burning. Wicks that are too short may not have enough material available to initiate a flame.

You can trim your wicks using wick trimmers, scissors, or straight-blade toenail clippers. Be sure to discard any debris before lighting your candle.

Our sculptural candles are made with core-free, 100% cotton wicks . These wicks are self-trimming and therefore curl into themselves rather than creating a ball of excess carbon that is more prone to smoke and soot build-up. Our sculptural wicks may need additional trimming during multi-hour burns if charred ends become too long and the flame begins to weaken as it curls into the melted wax.

  • LIGHTING

All wicks need fuel (wax) and oxygen to continue burning. When lighting a wood or cotton wick, hold the flame to the wick for approximately 5 seconds, allowing a small amount of wax around the base of the wick to melt. For quick and sustained lighting, be sure your wick is trimmed to the appropriate length (see “Wick Trimming”). This will allow wax to successfully flow upward and reach the flame.

Avoid tunneling to keep an adequate flow of oxygen available to the wick as it burns.

  • TUNNELING

Tunneling occurs when only a small portion of wax melts around the wick, leaving a ring of unmelted wax that forms a tunnel as it continues to burn. This results in unused wax and reduced burn time. Tunneling may also restrict oxygen flow to your wick and may result in difficulty maintaining a flame.

To avoid tunneling, allow the wax to melt and form an even pool across the entire surface of your container candles before extinguishing the flame. This helps the candle burn evenly, ultimately increasing the candle’s total burn time. Candles take approximately one hour per inch of diameter to achieve a full melt pool.

We recommend burning our Grande candles for at least 3 hours and our Petite candles for at least 2 hours to avoid tunneling.

For sculptural candles, we suggest leaving a small border (approximately 1/8”) of unmelted wax around the circumference of the candle to prevent excessive dripping and extend burn time. You can do this by simply blowing the candle out once it meets this border.

  • CLEAN UP

Our sculptural candles do drip depending on how they are cared for. Allow all spilled or dripped wax to cool and solidify. Once it is completely cooled, the wax will easily separate from hard surfaces and can be thrown in the trash. We recommend putting candles on a tray or candle holder to catch any drips that may fall to the base of the candle to avoid any unnecessary damage to surfaces.

All De Baec vessels are reusable and recyclable. If you choose to reuse your vessels, you can easily clean them with a few simple steps.

Carefully pour hot water into the vessel and allow it to sit until the wax begins to soften and separate from the glass. Wait until the wax has lifted to the surface of the water and solidified. You may then loosen the wax and discard in your trash. Before giving the vessel a final wash with warm, soapy water, remove any excess wax or oil residue using paper towels and rubbing alcohol. Wipe with rubbing alcohol again and rewash the vessel for stubborn residue or lingering scent.

If only a small amount of wax remains, some people prefer to place their vessel in the freezer and pop the wax out once it is cold. You can then discard them in the trash or save all of the extra wax bits and use them in a wax melter.

Although our diffuser base is natural and VOC-free and our fragrances are phthalate-free, many essential oils and fragrances are still harmful to our soil and marine life if not properly disposed of. Please be kind to our environment and do not pour melted wax, diffuser liquids, or any other products with fragrances down your drain. If you would like to discard fragranced products, we highly recommend bringing them to your local hazardous waste facility for proper disposal.

  • FIRE SAFETY

Remove candles from all packaging prior to burning (boxes, dust covers, etc.). Burn candles within sight. Keep them away from drafts and things that can catch fire. Keep away from children and pets. Burn your candles on an even, heat-resistant surface. Do not burn longer than four hours at a time. Stop burning when 1/4” of melted wax remains.

Please review the affixed warning label on your candle prior to burning.
