How do I know which scent to buy? Can I request a sample?

What does “clean-burning” mean?

Clean-burning candles are candles that tend to affect the surrounding air quality the least. Several factors determine how “clean” a candle burns, including wax, fragrance, and wick type. Pure soy and beeswax, 100% cotton and wood wicks, and phthalate-free fragrances are widely recognized as the cleanest burning ingredients in candle making.

Our candles are created using non-toxic cotton/wood wicks, pure soy wax, pure beeswax, natural essential oils, and premium phthalate-free fragrance oils. Each candle is tested to ensure that the wax, wick, and fragrance loads work in harmony to produce the best performing candle with virtually no smoke or soot production when properly burned.

Why soy wax?

De Baec candles are made with pure soy wax that is vegan, biodegradable, non-toxic, phthalate-free, and renewably sourced in the USA. Soy wax is known for its impeccably clean and long-lasting burn. Alongside beeswax, soy wax produces the slowest burn of all available waxes for candle making.

In contrast, paraffin wax is a petroleum byproduct that is widely used in candles and wax blends, as it is a cheaper material. Paraffin has a significantly reduced burn time and has been shown produce harmful smoke.

How do I care for my candle?

See our Candle Care page for information on how to properly care for your candles for an optimum burn. Understanding the foundations of How Candles Work may help you troubleshoot any problems you may have while burning your candle.

Why won’t my wick stay lit?

A wick that does not stay lit is likely too short, or the wick is a “self-trimming” wick that has become too long and begun to curl into the wax. See our Candle Care page for information on how to properly care for your candle. Understanding the foundations of How Candles Work may help you troubleshoot any problems you may have while burning your candle. If your wick is too short, we recommend using a heat gun or other tool to melt the wax around the top of the wick and discarding it. This will expose more wick (1/8-1/4” is ideal) for lighting an adequate flame.

Why does my candle wax darken after burning?

We value clean-burning candles. De Baec candles are free of additives that preserve or enhance the natural off-white color of soy wax when burning. Depending on the fragrance blend used in the candle, exposure to heat may discolor the wax to varying degrees. This change in color does not affect the integrity of the candle and is merely cosmetic.

Why does my candle have imperfections?

Pure, natural soy wax tends to have a rough and bumpy texture after burning, caused by inconsistent solidification rates as it cools. This is purely cosmetic and does not alter the performance of the candle. In fact, imperfections on soy wax candles are a sign that you are dealing with 100% pure soy wax. At De Baec, we believe that the imperfections are worth the clean, slow, and even burn that soy wax provides.

What is your return/refund policy?

Your satisfaction is very important to us. Please email us at support@debaeccandles.com with any concerns regarding your order and we will do our best to resolve any issues or concerns. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept returns or exchanges at this time, but may be able to provide refunds or replacements if needed.

My order was damaged or never arrived. What should I do?

We prioritize clean candles and do not include additives to strengthen our soy wax. Soy wax is a softer wax that is susceptible to damage from rough shipping and handling as well as heat during warmer weather. We do our best to package delicate candles to avoid damage, but what happens during transit is unfortunately out of our control.

Please contact support@debaeccandles.com if your order does not arrive as expected.

If damaged, please keep your order and do not discard until you have contacted De Baec support at support@debaeccandles.com and your case has been resolved. Please provide a picture and description of the damage so we can communicate this to our shipping provider. We will promptly send a replacement with free shipping.

SUMMER SHIPPING POLICY/PRACTICES

Depending on the time of the year and your location, warmer temperatures (above 90 degrees) may alter your product during transit. De Baec candles are made with soy wax, a softer wax that is susceptible to heat. Please order at your own risk.

We do our best to combat the heat by insulating our packages with multiple layers of cardboard and biodegradable packing peanuts, and including cooling gel packs if needed.

In temperatures above 80 degees, our candles ship on Mondays or Tuesdays via 2-Day priority mail to reduce the likelihood that they get stuck in transit over the weekend. We also offer expedited shipping (recommended to reduce the possibility that your candles may sit inside a warm location for an extended period of time). Please consider expediting your shipping and be sure to keep an eye on your tracking updates so you can promptly receive your items and bring them indoors to a cooler location.

What are your shipping options?

Orders are shipped via USPS First Class and Parcel Select (2-8 business days) and are only shipped within the United States at this time. Shipping is free on all orders over $50.00 with code SHIPFREE at checkout.

Each of our candles is made using curated fragrance and is hand-poured using artisanal techniques. Please allow up to three business days for order processing and up to three weeks for bulk/wholesale order processing so we can maintain our practices. Our goal is to process orders as quickly as possible without compromising a quality product.

You will receive an email with your tracking information once your package has shipped. Please contact us at support@debaeccandles.com if you have concerns regarding the timeliness of your order.

I have empty glass vessels. What can I do with them?

We love hearing that our customers are eager to reuse or recycle their vessels. Our vessels are curbside recyclable. If you are a local customer, we are happy to collect empty vessels from you for reuse. Please email us at support@debaeccandles.com and we can arrange pickup/shipping with you.

We have seen our vessels reused in a variety of ways. They can be used as candle holders, bathroom/office supply storage, drinking glasses, shot glasses, vases for flower arrangements, planters for succulents, etc. Please email us or tag us in your Instagram photos/stories/reels so we can see how you choose to reuse your vessels!

What is the burn time of your candles?

Burn time is affected by a variety of factors including wax type, wick type, fragrances, overall candle care, and environmental factors such as ambient temperature, airflow, etc. Please review our candle care page and follow our guidelines to achieve the best candle experience possible with optimal burn time.

We’ve found that our candles have the following (approximate) burn times when properly cared for:

Grande Candles: up to 55 hours

Petite Candles: up to 20 hours

Ribbed Tapers: up to 8 hours

Carousel Candles: approximately 10 hours per inch

Ribbed Duo: up to 35 hours (short candle)

How can I make my diffuser smell stronger?

In general, diffusers are meant to be used in smaller spaces. You may find that you need multiple diffusers on either end of a large room for optimal fragrance throw across the room. Here are few things you can try to make your diffuser smell stronger:

  1. Use more reeds. Our diffusers come with twelve 7” reeds. We recommend using 10-12 reeds in each diffuser for optimal fragrance throw, depending on your preference. Consider purchasing additional reeds, or longer reeds if desired.

  2. Consider flipping your reeds (with caution!) every 3-4 days. Flipping your reeds will allow fresh fragrance to fill the air and result in a stronger scent throw for several days.

How long do your diffusers last?

Unfortunately, there is no definitive amount of time that our diffusers last. The lifespan of a diffuser is affected by several factors, including how the diffuser is used and the environment that it is used in. In general, our diffusers should last months. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. A diffuser in a drafty or warm area may have a shorter lifespan, as the fragrance blend may dissipate more quickly.

  2. More reeds in a diffuser will utilize more diffuser liquid, making it more fragrant but decreasing its lifespan in the process. We recommend 10-12 reeds for optimal fragrance throw.

  3. More frequent flipping of reeds may decrease the lifespan of a diffuser. We generally recommend flipping your reeds (with caution!) 1-2 times per week, or every 3-4 days, for optimal fragrance throw.
